Everything you need to know about Work With Meaning, how we work, and how to get started — whether you're a company or a fractional leader.
About Work With Meaning
What is Work With Meaning?
Work With Meaning is a curated network that connects growing companies with vetted fractional executives. We don't operate a job board or a directory. We make personal introductions — connecting companies and fractional executives based on cultural fit, working style, and strategic need — and we maintain those relationships over time.
Who founded Work With Meaning?
Work With Meaning was founded by Ford Knowlton, who spent 20+ years building companies and studying what makes leadership relationships work. Ford previously built Cloverleaf, an assessment-driven team dynamics platform. Work With Meaning is built on the belief that relationships are the most undervalued asset in business, and that AI should make those relationships stronger — not replace them.
Is Work With Meaning a staffing firm or a recruiting agency?
Neither. Staffing firms and recruiters fill roles. We build relationship infrastructure. We introduce companies to leaders they should know — whether or not there's an immediate engagement — and we track the health of those relationships over time. Our goal is that when you need a leader, you're making a call, not starting a search.
How is Work With Meaning different from other fractional leadership platforms?
Most platforms give you access to a database. We give you access to a network of leaders we've actually spoken with, understand deeply, and would personally vouch for. Every connection is considered. Every introduction is personal. And we stay involved after the introduction — which most platforms don't.
For Companies
How do I get started as a business?
You apply. We review every application and follow up within 48 hours. If it's a fit, we schedule a conversation — one real call where we learn about your business, your culture, and where you're headed. From there we build your Strategic Relationship Plan.
What is a Strategic Relationship Plan?
A Strategic Relationship Plan (SRP) is our core deliverable for business partners. It maps your leadership gaps across the next 6 to 18 months — identifying what roles you need, what profile fits your culture and stage, and who from our bench is the right fit. It isn't a list of names. It's a strategy for building the leadership relationships your business needs.
How many companies do you work with at once?
We accept a limited number of new business partners each quarter — typically around 10. This is intentional. High-touch relationship work doesn't scale on volume. Every company that comes through gets the full weight of our network and our attention.
What does it cost to work with Work With Meaning as a business?
Pricing depends on the scope of engagement. Contact us to discuss — we'll give you a straightforward answer based on your situation.
What if I need a leader right now?
Apply and tell us that. We move quickly when we need to. If we have someone on our bench who's the right fit, we can move to an introduction in days, not weeks.
For Fractional Leaders
How do I apply to the bench?
Submit an application through our For Leaders page. We review every application personally. If it's a fit, someone from our team will reach out to have a real conversation — not an automated onboarding flow.
What are you looking for in a bench member?
Leaders who've done the work and have results to show for it. People who give honest referrals, admit when they're not the right fit, and understand that trust compounds over time. We care less about your title history and more about how you operate and whether you're someone we'd personally introduce to a client.
Do I have to pay to be on the bench?
No. Being on the Work With Meaning bench is not a subscription. We make introductions when we believe the fit is genuine, and we structure our economics around successful engagements.
How does the warmth score work?
Our platform tracks relationship health across your active connections — measuring recency, depth of interaction, and engagement signals. Your warmth score tells you (and us) which relationships need attention and which are strong. The goal is that no relationship on your bench goes cold without you knowing.
Fractional Leadership Basics
What is a fractional executive?
A fractional executive is an experienced business leader who works with a company on a part-time or project basis, typically serving multiple clients simultaneously. They bring C-suite level expertise without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire.
What does a fractional engagement typically look like?
Most engagements involve 10 to 20 hours per month over a 6 to 18 month period. The leader operates as part of your leadership team — attending key meetings, owning specific outcomes, and being accountable for results — not just deliverables.
How much does a fractional executive cost?
Rates typically range from $5,000 to $20,000 per month depending on the function, seniority, and scope. Compared to a full-time C-suite salary of $200,000 to $400,000 per year (plus benefits and equity), fractional leadership is significantly more cost-efficient — especially when you factor in the ability to scale time up or down as needs change.
